The Animasyros International Animation Festival invites creators from around the world to submit their films by June 30th, 2023. The largest festival of its kind in Greece and one of the largest in Europe will take place from the 26th of September to the 1st of October 2023 in Syros Island.

(Read our coverage of last year’s edition here.)

The artistic program of ANIMASYROS 2023 includes 7 competition sections, special tributes, training sessions, events, new local and international collaborations as well as the Agora, the industry event which has emerged as a reference point for the industry of the East Mediterranean region.

Syros Island, home to the festival

The main focus of this year’s festival, entitled Anima Ancients, is dedicated to Animation and Ancient Greece aiming to highlight the different ways in which the contemporary animation scene has reinterpreted, negotiated or been inspired by this long historical period.

Furthermore, ANIMASYROS 2023, recognizing the important position of the animation industry of the Iberian Peninsula and Latin America, presents a tribute to these countries, entitled La Animaciόn Iberoamericana, which includes feature films for children and adults, while also hosting short film programs curated by partner festivals from Spain and Latin America.

This year’s educational workshops inspired from Ancient Greece are aimed to familiarize children, young professionals, adolescents with disabilities as well as the elderly with the basic animation techniques as well as call them to experience new ones, such as “sand animation”.

Moreover, the Agora continues its development as one of the most vibrant parts of the Festival by building international collaborations within the framework of the Pitching Forum while presentations, roundtables, panel-discussions, workshops, masterclasses and networking meetings will offer the opportunity to professionals as well as animation lovers from all over the world to promote their work, expand their network, meet with established professionals, get in touch with the international community and discover what’s on in the field. The Agora of ANIMASYROS 2023 will focus, amongst others, on female creativity in animated documentary films while masterclasses and talks by internationally acclaimed Spanish producers will also take place.

Universities will also be present at this year’s program through strategic collaborations with the University of the Aegean, Technical University of Crete and Cyprus University of Technology while, for the first time, the Agora will host speed dating sessions between creators, internationally acclaimed producers and representatives of institutions of the audiovisual field. These networking activities will enable scriptwriters and directors to collaborate, develop a strong creative universe or pitch their ideas to the biggest producers of the international industry.

Joanna Quinn and Les Mills speaking at AnimaSyros 2022

Greek animation continues to have a leading position throughout the Festival and, in this context, pre-festival activities focused on Greek creators starting from summer and culminating at Syros will take place.

Visual identity

The visual identity of ANIMASYROS 2023 was designed by the award-winning animation and motion design studio Odd Bleat founded in 2015 by Yannis Zoumakis and Manos Gerogiannis. Odd Bleat has undertaken commercial projects for Dior, Ebay, Google, Revolut, Dow Jones as well as many cultural projects through their long-term collaboration with the Stavros Niarchos Foundation and the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. Focusing mainly on the creation of advertising videos, Odd Bleat has been distinguished in competitions, such as the Greek Visual Communication Design Awards (EBGE), Ermis Awards, Muse Awards and Vega Digital Awards.

Talking about their inspiration, the creators, amongst others, mention: “We aimed to focus on Hellenicity, the summer character and the creativity of ANIMASYROS. Two arches that refer to the typical Cycladic architecture and the two hills of Hermoupolis function as a canvas within other visual elements. We can discern two faces; the first one seems to be holding a camera through which the second one, looking like an ancient Greek goddess bust sculpture, is projected […]. This composition reflects the director’s gaze and film directing in general, as well as the projection, thus paying homage to the protagonists of the festival, the films. Between the faces, we can also see an ancient Greek column, which makes a point on this year’s theme of the festival. There are three arches at the ancient column’s base symbolizing the three arched doors of the Apollon Municipal Theater in Hermoupolis, home and heart of the Festival.”

In 2023, LINOLEUM Contemporary Animation and Media Art Festival is turning ten years old.

Throughout this time, the festival screened about 2,500 short animation films from over 60 countries and held dozens of master classes and lectures. Every year, LINOLEUM presents the best and most exciting pieces of the contemporary animation industry and promotes Ukrainian animation abroad.

Since the full-scale invasion started, it has been difficult to plan anything. However, the LINOLEUM team will do their best to hold an event in Kyiv from September 6 to 10 and tour Ukrainian cities.

For a very long time, the world had not been noticing us. The “Ukraine” as a geotag was practically invisible on the Europeans’ mental map while remaining unacceptable to the enemy neighbour. Others wrote our history at our place, our memory was erased, and we were told who we were supposed to be. Now, the entire world hears and sees us. While telling the story of our struggle in different languages, we finally returned to ourselves. Who are we? What are our values? What are we capable of?

From now on, we are building our own identity. We are creating the mythology of nowadays, writing the country’s history, passing on stories by word of mouth, sharing memes and talking about everything that is Ukrainian.

ONCE UPON A TIME… is the theme of the jubilee edition of the LINOLEUM 2023.

Authors can submit their works to the International Competition or the Commissioned Films Competition. Films made in any animation technique, including works combining animation with acting and documentaries, are eligible. The animated part should be at least 40% of the film and not exceed the running time of 30 minutes. The films must be created after January 1, 2022. The Ukrainian premiere of the film is not mandatory for the national movies to be watched by as many viewers as possible.

In addition to the International and Commissioned Films Competitions, the programme of the 10th LINOLEUM Festival will include Ukrainian competition, experimental films and video art, animation for and by kids, thematic blocks, Ukrainian animation retrospective, screenings of selections from international festivals, lectures and master classes.

Films are accepted exclusively through the FilmFreeway festival platform filmfreeway.com/Linole…

The call is open till May 14th.

The festival regulations are available following think link.

For the first time ever, filmmakers can now submit their films to Cardiff Animation Nights!

Cardiff Animation Nights (CAN) are free monthly screenings of great animated short films from around the world at The Underdog in the centre of Cardiff and online.

CAN has been running for eight years, and has screened some of the best animated short films from the global animation festival circuit, including Oscar- and BAFTA-winning shorts. The events give people in Cardiff and beyond a chance to watch independent animation on the big screen or the comfort of their own homes, and meet like-minded people at the bar or in the live chat.

Cardiff Animation Nights Head Programmer Ellys Donovan says:

We love bringing people together at Cardiff Animation Nights to watch great animation. We’re excited to be opening submissions for the first time and can’t wait to see all the amazing work that will be submitted from around the world.

Over its eight year history, Cardiff Animation Nights has grown from reaching an audience of 20 in the back room of a Cardiff pub, to reaching monthly audiences of up to 200 at its current home at The Underdog in Cardiff, as well as reaching international audiences online since 2020. To date CAN has screened over 600 animated films at venues in Cardiff and online.

For the first time CAN are opening submissions. Filmmakers can submit animated films of any genre and up to 20 minutes in length through FilmFreeway. Each month a programme of short films will be selected to be screened either online or in-person. All films screened in 2023 will be eligible for the Cardiff Animation Nights 2023 awards, with a winning film will be selected by a jury of industry professionals.

Cardiff Animation Nights is run by a team of animators and animation lovers in Cardiff, led by Ellys Donovan and Lauren Orme, with help and support from numerous individuals and organisations from the animation community in Cardiff and further afield.

We cordially invite all academics and artists to participate in the 2nd RISING OF LUSITANIA ANIMADOC CONFERENCE (10 – 11 September 2022, online), accompanying IV RISING OF LUSITANIA AnimaDoc Film Festival (07 – 13 September 2022, Lodz, Poland).

Submission deadline: Sep 2nd, 2022. Participation is free of charge.

All details you can find HERE

Animation can unite us in the face of difficult experiences.

It may combine the multiple styles of the creators into an expressive statement. Let us recall examples of collective projects created in response to the painful events of recent years and months – #sprzeciwpolek // #polish_women_resistance, #AnimatorsForBelarus, Animators Against War series, or Animation for Ukraine. This type of creative engagement, although based on rebellion, builds a community consisting not only of the authors but also of the viewers.

Many stirring animated documentaries are created by merging the confessions of people whose lives were influenced by similar geopolitical and cultural circumstances. In ‘It’s Like That’ (2005) by the Australian collective Southern Ladies Animation Group children with a refugee experience talk about living in confinement. The characters of the embroidered ‘Tanko Bole Chhe’ (dir. Nina Sabnani, 2010) are, among others, artists who are looking for their identity after an involuntary migration. From the shocking ‘$ 75,000’ (dir. Moïse Togo, 2020) we learn the stories of people drastically injured due to the superstition about the supernatural powers of pigment-free skin.

Also the most famous full-length animadocs so far, ‘Waltz with Bashir’ (dir. Ari Folman, 2008) and ‘Flee’ (dir. Jonas Poher Rasmussen, 2021), although they are based on personal confessions, speak out on matters that concern the entire social groups. The self-therapy which can be noticed in the films provokes the audience’s reflections on matters that go far beyond the private experiences of the film’s figure.

We would like to devote our talks that accompany this year’s edition of Rising of Lusitania AnimaDoc Film Festival to animadocs and other animations referring to real and difficult events, social and cultural phenomena. We are aware that we will face different, incomparable stories, and the belief in the unifying potential of animation may turn out to be weak and insufficient to build hope.

We invite all authors and researchers to consider the following and related issues in their 15-minute speeches:

  • History and collective memory in animation.
  • Animated images of war, pandemics and social crises.
  • Animation in the face of trauma: attempts of (auto- / arte-) therapy.
  • Engaged animation, propaganda in animation, and animated rebellion.
  • Collective animators’ projects, ‘social’ animation.
  • Animation as an expression of social mood.
  • The material of the animation and its relationship to the place it tells about.
  • Animated stories about the identity of the communities.

Please, fill in the form to submit your speech: https://forms.gle/uHkzBrrAz6WmozxA9 (the submission deadline: 2nd of September 2022). Participation is free of charge. In case of any questions, please, contact us: animadoc.conference@gmail.com.

Warsaw Animation Film Festival calls out to filmmakers from around the world to submit their short animations by the early bird deadline of May 31th, 2022. The screenings will take place between the 26th and 31st of October 2022 in the arthouse cinema Amondo, the impressively large cinema Elektronik as well as open air venues around the river.

Although it’s only the 4th time Poland’s capital is hosting the event, it’s already considered one of the most important animation festivals in the country. The festival organizers, Tessa Moult-Milewska and Ewelina Leszczyńska have partnered with Poland’s most successful post-production company Platige Image, a creative animation studio specializing in 3D animation and digital special effects, to bring to life the Ex Anima Foundation and promote animated films through various educational and artistic events, the most important one of them being WAFF.

The festival’s competition program will consist of the latest International shorts and will be accompanied by special events, like animated documentary screenings, music clips, masterclasses and workshops. Previous year’s industry events include „The Cinematic Storytelling of Toy Story 4” conducted by Patrick Lin and Ye Won Cho, „Emotion and Story” with Mike Catchuela, or series of workshops about previs and games with professionals from Platige Image. The goal of the festival is to introduce animation as a mature, highly artistic and socially engaged medium of communication. The Ex Anima Foundation responsible for the festival wants to offer the capital an annual event devoted to celebrating the art of animation and hope that it will become an integral and living part of the city’s culture scene.

A Jury of 3 industry professionals will debate and choose the Best Film of the festival as well as hand out their Special Mentions. An important part of the festival’s ceremony is also the Audience Award.
